Getting your name, brand, product or cause to trend on Twitter requires a lot of tweets and retweets from passionate and loyal twitterers. Some of the best Nigeria-related twitter trends we’ve seen so far are #abaversion, #MI2 and #englishmadeinnigeria just to mention a few.
For some days now, the team managing Etisalat’s twitter handle (@etisalat_9ja) have been tweeting #Nigerianidol and #Easynet as many times as possible hoping to get on the list of Twitter’s trending topics worldwide.
But it’s not working. It won’t work. At least not now. Not even if they gave out lots of Blackberry’s and Galaxy Tabs.
In case you don’t know, Nigerian Idol is a television reality show with a nation-wide search for Nigeria’s next solo superstar. Hopefully, #Nigerianidol would trend when the show gets to the final stage. Perhaps on the final day when a winner finally emerges. After all, BBA5 didn’t trend on Twitter until the final eviction show.
By the way, Easynet, a service from Etisalat that offers flexible Internet bundles to its subscribers, might be looking to use its current promo to get a trending spot on Twitter. The Easynet promo offers a new data plan of 10MB to browse for 24hrs at N100 only and 75MB to browse for 2weeks at N500 only.
Are they trying too hard? Will #Nigerianidol and #Easynet ever trend on Twitter?
